The Esso Cup is the Canadian national women's midget ice hockey championship, sponsored by Esso. It is an annual event, sanctioned by Hockey Canada, that takes place each April.
For the first time in the Female Midget National Championship, there is a repeat champion after the St. Albert Slash beat the Saskatoon Stars 2-1 in the final.
The Saskatoon Stars have soared through the field at the Esso Cup, posting a perfect 5-0 mark against their competitors. They’ve outscored opponents 23-3 in including three shutouts. The closest games they’ve played were a 4-1 win over St. Albert and 5-2 victory over the Northern Selects.
Further east, the best female Midget teams head to Bridgewater, NS, the host of the 2018 Esso Cup. Located just over an hour south of Halifax, the Esso Cup is being held in the Atlantic region for the first time.
The 2017 Esso Cup has wrapped up with all of the hardware handed out to respective teams. The bronze medal game had the Durham West Lightning and the host Pembina Valley Hawks squaring off a day after tough semifinal losses, both teams lost by one to St. Albert and Triolet in those games to put them in the bronze final.
The St. Albert Slash go into Friday’s semifinals with the best record in the 2017 Esso Cup. After going undefeated throughout the preliminary round, the Slash are primed and ready to put themselves in a position to hoist the Esso Cup Saturday night. St. Albert walked through Durham West in commanding fashion to keep them undefeated through the tournament.
Goaltenders made the biggest impact on Day 4 of the 2017 Esso Cup, while two teams locked up playoff berths on Wednesday. St. Albert was able to earn their semifinal bid early in the day after taking care of Prince Albert.
Day 3 of the 2017 Esso Cup saw all three teams west of Manitoba sweep the entire day with victories over Mid-Isle, Triolet and Durham West. Prince Albert was able to secure their first win of the tournament to put them back into contention for the medal rounds.
The second day of the 2017 Esso Cup helped two teams build some momentum for the later part of the tournament. Quebec came away with another dominating win as the Harfangs were able to take care of the Wildcats from the Atlantic.
The teams from the western side of the country took an early edge on the first day of the 2017 Esso Cup competition.
