Team Canada’s outlook is a lot brighter after day two of the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
Thanks in large part to a 3-for-7 effort on the power play, the Canadians defeated Finland 5-1 Tuesday in their second round-robin game.
Canada is now in second place in Group B with a record of 1-0-1-0 and can clinch a spot in the semifinals with a regulation win over Slovakia on Wednesday.
On Monday, the Canadians started the tournament with a 4-3 shootout loss to Russia.
Last year, Canada learned the importance of taking care of its opponents in regulation.
Because one of their two round-robin wins last year came in overtime, it cost them a point in the standings and they were eliminated from championship contention after placing third in their pool.
Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Calen Addison, Nolan Foote, Jack McBain and Gabriel Fortier all scored against Finland Tuesday while captain Joe Veleno, Ryan Merkley and Barrett Hayton each collected two assists.
Olivier Rodrigue was on the verge of a shutout before he was beaten by Matias Maccelli with 1:41 remaining in the third.
Canada led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 after the second. The Canadians doubled up the Finns in shots by a total of 29-14.
Elsewhere at the Ivan Hlinka on Tuesday, Russia took over the top spot in Group B with a 9-3 win over Slovakia, Sweden defeated the Czech Republic 7-3 to remain atop Group A and the United States edged Switzerland 2-1.
