Right NOW, thousands of hockey moms all across Canada are gearing up for the 2017-18 hockey season. If Hockey Canada’s annual report is any indication, at least 75,000 of those hockey players will be brand new players to the game and come September, many of those initiation level kids will be chauffeured to the arena by brand new hockey moms.
So I thought it would be worthwhile to impart some advice to the ‘TimBit’ hockey moms. NOW.
Get your gear in gear NOW.
If you haven’t been gung-ho about hockey so far and do not have all the twenty-one pieces of hockey equipment all set to go for your child’s first year, NOW would be the time. Actually NOW is probably too late as there is nothing on sale. Those sporting goods stores can smell your procrastination and desperation. If you haven’t already got all your gear in gear, talk to neighbours, friends, social media networks about hand-me-downs. If you bought all the equipment at the end of last season thinking, “How smart am I getting all this on sale?” have your child try it on again. Bet you a loonie they’ve already outgrown some of it!
Take out your winter jacket NOW.
I know you’re thinking: “What? It’s only August!” Right. Well. You’re going to need it in September. I can brag about being a veteran hockey mom, sitting in the foyer, sipping my hot coffee. You’re an initiation level hockey mom. You’re going to need to be rink side at the ready to take your little tyke off the ice when he or she throws their first (of many) “Alright Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my Slushie now”–moment. All the while your coffee is getting cold.
Be patient. Be kind. Be friendly.
Once you’re at the arena, that’s really great advice to take NOW: It’s a loooonnngg season. These are your people now; they will have your (and your child’s) back and you will have theirs (and their children’s). If that’s not reason enough, here’s another: carpooling.
Put a pair of socks in your glove compartment NOW.
Still rocking that summer pedicure and sandals? If your nail colour isn’t blue it soon will be. For an added bonus: the arena is probably the only place in Canada where you won’t be judged for wearing socks and sandals!
Get the app. THAT app. For coffee. NOW.
No other coffee will do for the hockey mom.
Buy a portable charger for your camera phone NOW.
Otherwise, without fail, your phone will die just before you can snap that first goal, just before you need to call CAA, and just as the coach is calling you with the change in venue.
The most important advice for NOW?
It’s just a game and the first goal is “fun.” I know you’ve heard this a thousand times from other hockey moms. It’s just hockey. It’s just their first year. You have thirteen more seasons to get it right. Let the pucks fall where they may and enjoy!
Three cheers for all the new kids on the block this season – and their hockey playing kids too!
