A total of 29 players linked to NCAA Division 1 men's programs took part in the 2017 NHL Scouting Combine last week in Buffalo, N.Y.
Three current student-athletes and 26 college hockey recruits, including five Canadians, went through interviews, medical testing and fitness testing under the watchful eyes of NHL team reps over the week-long event in preparation for this year's NHL Entry Draft.
Heading the list of Canucks was defenceman Cale Makar from Calgary, Alta. who has committed to the University of Massachusetts Minutemen for 2017-18.
Playing in his third season with the Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in 2016-17, Makar had a career year with 24 goals and 75 points during the regular season and was named the top Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) player-of-the-year. He capped that off by being named MVP and top defenceman at the national championships (RBC Cup) for the second consecutive season.
The other performers from north of the border included Halifax, N.S. native Shane Bowers of the United States Hockey League's Waterloo Black Hawks (Boston University); Greely, Ont. native Cameron Crotty of the Central Canadian Hockey League's Brockville Braves (Boston University); King City, Ont. native Mario Ferraro of the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers (Massachusetts); and Red Deer, Alta. native Kale Howarth of the British Columbia Hockey League's Trail Smoke Eaters (Connecticut).
The three current NCAA players who attended the combine were highly-rated goaltender Jake Oettinger of the Boston University Terriers, defenceman Luke Martin of the Michigan Wolverines and forward Ryan Poehling of the St. Cloud State Huskies.
